For more than a century, Scouting America has helped build the future leaders of this country by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun and friendship. Troop 1313, chartered by the Sunrise Valley Elementary School PTA since 1989, serves the youth of the Reston, Vienna, Herndon, and surrounding communities. Scouts from 11 to 18 years old enjoy the lessons of scouting through an engaging program of adventure, challenge, leadership, service, and learning. The ideals of the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout Motto ("Be Prepared"), and Scout Slogan ("Do a Good Turn Daily”) lay the foundation for the scouting journey. Together with the skills learned and the experiences gained as a Scout, youth meet the challenges of today while preparing for tomorrow.
YOUTH LEADERSHIP
Troop 1313 is a Scout-led troop under the guidance of adult Scoutmasters. By participating in activities and fulfilling the responsibilities of various elected or appointed roles in the Troop, scouts learn to work together, and develop strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills. Those Scouts holding leadership roles sit on the Patrol Leader's Council (PLC).
Key roles include:
Senior Patrol Leader and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader
Patrol Leader and Assistant Patrol Leader (1 for each Patrol)
Quartermaster--maintains troop's supplies
Librarian--oversees the use of troop books and pamphlets
Scribe--keeps records of PLC discussions
Webmaster--maintains troop website and other technology
Instructor--teaches scouting skills to others
Troop Guide--mentor to the members of the new-Scout patrol
Outdoor Ethics Guide--plans outdoor programs consistent with Scouting outdoor principles
Junior Assistant Scoutmaster--16-17 year old Scouts who assist the Scoutmaster
Den Chief--engages with a local Cub Scout den and supports their activities
ADULT LEADERSHIP
While our Troop is scout led, we have active involvement from our parents as well. There are lots of ways to get involved on a deeper level—from being an Assistant Scoutmaster to becoming a merit badge counselor to sitting on a Board of Review panel. Some require very little time commitment and others require more. No prior scouting experience is needed.
Though it is not required, parents are always encouraged to stay and attend meetings as their schedule allows. It is a nice way to see what Scouting is all about, to meet and connect with the other parents, and to ask questions and stay informed.
