Eagle Scouts

“Eagle Scout.” The term is synonymous with the words “character” and “achievement.” Since the rank’s introduction in 1911 more than two million youth have earned it. While that number may sound impressive, it accounts for less than 5% of those who enrolled in the Scouting program. Earning the rank of Eagle takes time, skill, hard work, and perseverance; it doesn’t come easy. Which is why “Eagle Scout” is the most coveted award in Scouting. And the title "Eagle Scout" is held for life; "Once an Eagle, always an Eagle."

“Eagle Scout” carries with it special significance not only in Scouting but also in higher education, business, and community service. The award is a performance-based achievement requiring the earning of 20+ merit badges, and demonstrating Scout spirit, service, and leadership. Even if a Scout does not earn the rank, the goals of Scouting—citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness—remain important and has a marked impact on their life.

Eagle Scouts include thirty-eight U.S. astronauts, a President and Supreme Court Justice, judges, prominent businessmen, inventors, medical doctors, Medal of Honor recipients, military service members of all ranks, an FBI director, Secretaries of Defense, Senators, Congressmen, governors, mayors, Olympic and professional athletes, movie directors, actors, and musicians. And they include members of the Reston, Virginia community.
