SERVICE

Troop 1313 does a lot of service every year!  Whether it's helping with the Reston Triathlon, participating in Scouting for Food, laying wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery, running the concession stand for the Sunrise Valley basketball challenge, pitching in to help with Eagle projects or any of a myriad of other service opportunities, Troop 1313 Scouts can always be counted on to lend a hand.

RESTON TRIATHLON

Scouts from Troop 1313 give directions, encourage the participants, and are key to the safety of the participants on the bike course of the Reston Triathlon. We made up more than 50% of the bike marshals on last year's course! According to triathlon organizers, "without you volunteering, it would not be possible to put on such a race."

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA

For the past several years, Troop 1313 has participated in Wreaths Across America, an effort to place wreaths on the graves at Arlington National Cemetery in December.  Troop members and their families spend a Saturday morning helping to make sure the veterans are honored with a wreath on each grave.

SCOUTING FOR FOOD

Working in conjunction with Cub Scout Pack 1313, Scouts from Troop 1313 collect food each fall as part of the BSA's Scouting for Food program. After picking up the bags from the surrounding neighborhood, Scouts return to Sunrise Valley and work with representatives from F.I.S.H. to pack up the canned goods.

Generosity Feeds

Several troop members participated in "Generosity Feeds," an organization that mobilizes hundreds of people to package and feed children in our community who might otherwise go hungry outside of school hours. The goal is to package 10,000 or more meals in just a couple hours.

Eagle Projects

Each year several of Troop 1313 Scouts earn the highly coveted Eagle rank.  To do so requires a service project.  In the past we've had Scouts clear invasive species and plant trees, "refurbish" walking trails, create garden beds, build benches at schools, create "floating sunning platforms" for turtles, replace fencing to protect beaver habitat.  There's no shortage of ideas, or opportunities, for volunteering.

Additional Opportunities

We never know when service opportunities will arise.  Whether it's helping at a Cub Scout pack's Pinewood Derby,  working the concession stand for our chartering PTA, or some other event, the call goes out for volunteers and members of Troop 1313 can be found responding.
